Clayton State men make it two straight with 3-0 shutout over Anderson
Madegwa, Lara, Kalinov each score as Lakers go 2-0 in Laker Shootout

MORROW, Ga. – September 1, 2007 – The Clayton State Lakers made it two straight victories on Saturday to open the 2007 men’s soccer season with an impressive 3-0 victory over visiting Anderson in the Laker Shootout at Laker Field.

This marks the first 2-0 start to a season by a Laker squad in two seasons.

Like Friday’s 5-0 victory over Belmont Abbey, the Lakers used their vaunted defense to neutralize an Anderson squad that scored four goals on Friday against North Georgia. Clayton State limited Anderson to a total of seven shots, including only one on goal.

Meanwhile, the Lakers kept up the offensive pressure for much of the game, using their tremendous speed up front and in the midfield to keep the Trojan defense off-balance. Clayton State attempted 19 shots for the contest.

The Lakers struck for their first goal in the 24
th minute as Jamal Geathers stole the ball at midfield and fed a streaking Tonny Madegwa down the middle for the goal and a 1-0 Clayton State lead.

The second half was barely a minute old when the Lakers struck again. Defender Brett Neilson set up the goal with a pass to midfielder Hailab Habtom on the left flank. Habtom then fed midfielder Johnny Lara with a cross in front of the goal for a 2-0 Clayton State lead.

Junior forward Angel Kalinov finished the Laker scoring a breakaway goal in the 68
th minute off an incoming pass from midfielder Marijan Babic.

Junior Billy Hale recorded his second straight shutout for the Lakers with one save, while Anderson goalkeeper Adrian Osborne recorded two saves for the Trojans (1-2). It was a physical game with six yellow cards issued and a red card against Anderson’s Stephon Henry.

Clayton State hits the road for the first time this season with a key early-season at undefeated Lees-McRae on Thursday at 7 p.m.
