Tampa offensive onslaught too much for Lakers
Madegwa scores both Clayton State goals in 5-2 defeat

TAMPA, Fla. --- AUGUST 26, 2006 --- The season-opening swing through Florida hasn’t been smooth for the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team. After dropping a tough double-overtime decision to Rollins on Thursday, the Lakers fell 5-2 on Saturday at Tampa.

Clayton State, ranked eighth in Division II, is now 0-2 overall. Tampa is now 1-0 with the season-opening victory.

The Lakers had their hands full with the Spartans, especially forward Ricardo Cardoso. The junior forward scored the first four of Tampa’s five goals. He wasted little time with his first goal, scoring unassisted in the third minute. Cardoso added goals in the 24th minute, the 49th minute and again in the 57th minute.

Clayton State’s two goals came from midfielder Tonny Madegwa. The senior scored on a double assist by Junior Smith and Hailab Habtom in the 26th minute, and again in the 64th minute off an assist by Kevin Crooks.

Laker goalkeeper Heath Padgett recorded 10 saves in the defeat, while his Tampa counterpart Mike DeVore recorded six saves. Tampa had 29 shots, compared to 12 for Clayton State.

Clayton State concludes the three-game swing through the Sunshine State with a 2 p.m. game at Florida Tech on Monday.
