SCAD hands Clayton State tough 2-1 double-overtime defeat
Lakers now an even 4-4 after falling in non-conference contest

MORROW, Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 14, 2006 --- For the second straight season, the Savannah College of Art & Design Bees proved to be a thorn in the side of the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team. In a hard-fought game, SCAD pulled out a 2-1 victory in double-overtime over Clayton State at Laker Field.

SCAD, which is coached by former Laker head coach John Rootes, improved to 3-2-1 overall and ended Clayton State’s three-game winning streak. The Lakers are now an even 4-4 overall.

After a first half that ended in a 1-1 tie, the two teams played all out for the second half and into the first overtime session. However, in the second session, Clayton State’s Andre Rall and SCAD’s Josiah Millar both battled for the ball 35 yards from the Laker goal. The ball was kicked, clearing the outstretched reach of Laker goalkeeper Heath Padgett for the Bees’ game-winner in the 102nd minute.

Millar was credited with the game-winner on the play for SCAD.

The Bees took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Matt Engele scored on a penalty kick. However, the Lakers evened it three minutes later on a 30-yard direct kick from the right side by Johnny Lara.

There were a combined six yellow and red cards issued in the game, and Clayton State played a man down for much of the second half after Daniel English was ejected with the red card. Padgett recorded five saves for the Lakers, while SCAD goalkeeper Tommi Sarkkinen recorded six saves.

Clayton State returns to Laker Field on Saturday night, playing host to Montevallo at 7:30 p.m.
