12th-ranked Lakers open season with 1-0 win over Florida Southern

Game Stats
LAKELAND, FL -
Clayton State's Shaun Baddock scored the only goal of the match with just under two minutes to play in the first overtime and CCSU goalkeeper Warren van der Westhuizen came up with four big saves as #12 Clayton State defeated Florida Southern 1-0 in men’s soccer Monday night.

Baddock’s header ended the match in the 99th minute, giving the Lakers its third straight season-opening victory. The game-winning shot came after the ball had bounced around the penalty box and off several players before Des Martin finally helped the Lakers (1-0) win possession. The sophomore midfielder won a jump ball with the ensuing bounce coming down in front of Baddock just six yards from the net.

Prior to that, the FSC Moccasins (1-1) had controlled the overtime period, getting off two strong shots that nearly ended the game. On the first, Westhuizen came up with a diving stop to thwart Robbie Sanger off a corner kick, and the second was a rocket by Aaron DeLoach that Asa Pepia nearly deflected into the net from close range.

Florida Southern also controlled play for most of the first half, outshooting Clayton State by a 5-1 margin. But the Clayton State goalkeeper again came up with two big plays to keep the Moccasins off the board. His diving save of a Clay Roberts’ shot from 20 yards out in the 28th minute was the first and his second came just two minutes later when he went high to tip a shot by Sanger just over the cross bar.

The Lakers came back in the second half to outshoot the Moccasins 6-3, but despite a handful of good scoring opportunities neither team could break the deadlock.

Clayton State will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Presbyterian College in 7 p.m. match at the Henry County Soccerplex in McDonough, GA.
