Morrow, GA--December 7, 2001-- For the second season in a row, a trio of players from the Clayton College & State Univeristy men's soccer team have been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) with All-Southeast Region honors.

The trio have helped guide the Lakers the past two seasons to a combined 29-7-6 record, the 2000 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, the 2001 Peach Belt Conference regular season title and two trips to the 16-team NCAA Championships.

Weshuizen was named First Team All-Southeast Region this year after last year being named Second Team. Capazario and Casebeer were named to the Second Team All-Southeast Region squad. The honor is a first for Capazario, while Casebeer was named First Team in 2000.

Marco, who was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2001, is a four-year starter for the Lakers. He is Clayton State's all-time leader in matches started (73) and matches played (78).

His biggest contribution this season came on defense where he helped Clayton State hold opponents to a PBC league-low 0.78 goals against average and a league-high 10 shutouts. Capazario also scored two goals in the team's regular season championship clinching match against the University of North Carolina Pembroke.

Lander defeats CCSU 2-1 in two overtimes;
  advances to NCAA Elite Eight

Game Stats
Morrow, GA-- November 10, 2001--
It was a match up featuring the Peach Belt Conference's best offense against the league's best defense. The match took two overtimes to be decided, but in the end, the offense prevailed.

Two minutes into the second overtime, Lander University's Mikko Kotailainen fired a 20-yard shot through the Clayton College & State University defense that found the upper left corner of the net, giving the Senators a 2-1 double overtime victory over Clayton State in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

The win advances 16th-ranked Lander (18-3) to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships where the Senators will face the University of Tampa. The match will be played either on November 17th or November 18th at Tampa. The loss ends eighth-ranked Clayton State's season at 11-4-5.

"These two teams play very contrasting styles with our offense and their defense, said Lander head coach Van Taylor. "I knew it would be a game of inches either way, and that's what it turned out to be. It was a very good game."

Said Clayton State head coach John Rootes, "We've been in overtimes all season long. And what has happened to us is that we get tired and break down. That's what happened today. We were pleased to get as far as we did this season."

Lander jumped out to an early lead 16 minutes into the match as junior forward Jaime Creaghan (Sheffield, England) scored a goal off a keeper deflection from less than 10 yards. Kotilainen (Lappeenranta, Finland) was credited with the assist.

Clayton State's best chance to score in the half came 25 minutes into play as junior Stephen Hughes (McDonough, GA) had a one-on-one with sophomore Senator keeper Matthew Shirley (Greenwood, SC) only have his shot off the mark wide.

In the second half, the Lakers knotted the score at 1-1 at the 60-minute mark on a header by junior Josh Miller (Jonesboro, GA). The shot came off a throw-in from Hughes.

"We had a lot of injuries coming into this game - including our two best players," said Rootes. "That forced us to play a lot of freshmen today. "In the second half, we moved players around to try and generate some sort of attack. We did a better job of putting together passes and tried to press them a little bit."

The Senators best scoring opportunity in the second half came when Creaghan corralled a loose ball and had a one-on-one with Clayton State keeper Warren van der Westhuizen (Johannesburg, South Africa) only to be denied after a diving save by Westhuizen.

In the first overtime, Lander's Kotilainen had a couple of scoring opportunities but couldn't covert. His first came early in the overtime on a diving save by Westhuizen, while his second opportunity came with 30 seconds remaining on a shot that hit the cross bar.

"Both teams were pushing each other all day long," said Lander forward Scott Montgomery (Penicuik, Scotland). "I knew something was going to give."

Lander outshot the Lakers 18-9 in the match and had nine corner kicks compared to only four for the Lakers. Westhuizen finished with nine saves in the match, while Shirley had four.

On the last goal Westhuizen said, "We were a little bit tired after 100 minutes of playing. We also had a lot of youngsters on the field and in situations like that, experience; that's the winner. That's the team that wins, that can bring the most experience."

Said Kotilainen, "Given what we've gone through against this team the past two years, its very sweet to come in here and win. This was the game we wanted to play last season, and we had to come back all the way to this point."

Clayton State had won the last three meetings between the two clubs, including a 3-2 win earlier this year. Lander's win gives them a 4-3 edge in the all-time series. The NCAA appearance for Clayton State was its second appearance in as many years. Last year's first round NCAA match against Francis Marion had to be settled on penalty kicks after four overtimes. FMU prevailed 5-3 in the shootout.

Clayton State receives bid to NCAA
Tourney; to host Lander on Sat.

Morrow, GA-- November 5, 2001-- For the second year in a row, the Clayton College & State University men's soccer team has received a bid to the 16-team NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships.

The only difference this season, the Lakers will be the host team.

Clayton State received its bid on Monday and will host Peach Belt Conference foe Lander University in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Nov. 10. The winner of Saturday's match will advance the NCAA quarterfinals the next week.

Clayton State (11-3-5) is coming off a 1-0 double-overtime loss in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals Saturday after winning its first ever Peach Belt Conference regular season title earlier this season. Lander (16-3), the second place finisher in the Peach Belt, is coming off a 2-1 loss to USC Spartanburg in the PBC Tournament finals on Sunday.

The Lakers defeated Lander 3-2 earlier this year and have won the last three matches between the two clubs. However, Lander is 11-2 since Clayton State's win earlier this year, while the Lakers are 5-3-3.

The match-up will be a battle between the Peach Belt's top offense in Lander and the PBC's best defense in Clayton State. The Senators have scored a PBC best 51 goals on the season, while the Lakers have surrendered a league low 15 goals on the year.

The Senators' All-PBC scoring tandem of Scott Montogmery and Mikko Kotilainen led the conference in scoring as both had double-digit goals and assists on the season. Montgomery had 15 goals and 10 assists, while Kotilainen had 11 goals and 11 assists.

Eighth-ranked CCSU (11-3-5), the tourney's No. 1 seed and last year's tournament champion, will now have to wait and see if it will receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In Saturday's semifinal match both teams were deadlocked for more than 105 minutes before sophomore Ringerike (Oslo, Norway) came up with the game-winning score. The shot was set-up on a cross from senior Hasse Eranka (Mikkeli, Finland).

The match was a defensive struggle throughout with both teams combining for only 15 shots. USCS finished with nine shots, while Clayton State had six. Clayton State junior keeper Westhuizen (Johannesburg, South Africa) finished with four saves, while Spartanburg junior keeper John Andrew Rousseau (Prince Edward Island, Canada) also had four saves.

Clayton State's best opportunity to score came midway through the second half when Clayton State junior All-PBC performer Barry Casebeer (Austin, TX) beat keeper Rousseau to the end line for a ball and then tried to cross to freshman David Dowling (Benoni, South Africa) on an open net. However, the pass didn't make it through as a USCS defender rushed back to break up the play.
