Clayton
State’s Wilcox, Binfield earn Division II PING All-American
honors for men’s golf
Lakers
have two All-Americans in a season for the first time in a
decade
MORROW,
Ga. – June 11, 2009 –
For the first time in a decade, Clayton State will have two
All-Americans in men’s golf in the same season.
The 2009 Division II PING All-American teams were announced, and
Clayton State had two players earn honors. Senior Will Wilcox
was selected first team Division II All-American for a second
straight season, while junior Wade Binfield was selected
honorable mention Division II All-American. In addition, with
his honorable mention honor in 2007, Wilcox becomes the first
ever three-time All-American at Clayton State in men’s golf.

Both players also earned Division II All-Southeast Region honors
– the third straight for Wilcox and the first ever for Binfield.
“While everyone expected Will to earn his third All-American
award, Wade has to be given extra credit for his accomplishments
this spring, culminating with leading the team at Conference,
capturing 2009 Medalist honors, and then being recognized on
both the PING All-Southeast Region and Honorable Mention
All-American teams," said Clayton State head coach Barry
Harwell.
Binfield, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., came on strong for
the Lakers this spring, culminating by winning the Peach Belt
Conference individual championship and leading Clayton State to
its first ever Peach Belt Conference championship in men’s golf.
For the season, he finished with a 73.5 scoring average, good
for 14th in the Peach Belt Conference.
In addition to winning the Peach Belt Conference title, Binfield
also tied for first with Wilcox at the Orchard Fall
Invitational, finished second at the Southeastern
Intercollegiate, tied for eighth at the State Farm-Laker
Intercollegiate and tied for 11th at the Queens
Invitational.
Wilcox,
a senior from Pell City, Ala., became the first ever Clayton
State golfer to earn Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year
honors and the first ever Laker to earn All-Peach Belt
Conference for two straight seasons. Wilcox was the unanimous
choice for PBC Player of the Year after winning four tournaments
combined during the fall and spring.
This spring, he won three straight tournaments to start the
season – the Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate, the Matlock
Invitational and the Samford Invitational. He finished one
stroke off the pace of Binfield at the Peach Belt Conference
Championship.
Wilcox led the Peach Belt Conference in scoring with a 70.9
stroke average and finished in the Top Five in seven of the 12
events he played in this season. Wilcox shot a season-low round
66 at the Outback Intercollegiate, and had a PBC-best 19 rounds
of par or under this season.
