Clayton State leads Southbridge Pirate Invitational after first
round
Lakers shoot
impressive 289 to open up six-stroke advantage at mid-way point
 SAVANNAH,
Ga. –
February 25, 2008 –
Fresh off receiving its first Division II national ranking in nearly
a decade, the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team followed up the
newfound success with an impressive start in the Southbridge Pirate
Invitational on Monday.
The 22 nd-ranked
Lakers, behind stellar rounds from both Will Wilcox and Jonathan
Visconti, shot an impressive one-over par 289 to stake themselves to
the first-round lead in the tournament at Soutbridge Golf Course.
Clayton State leads Newberry by six strokes, 24th-ranked
Lander by seven strokes, Coker by eight strokes and 13th-ranked
Georgia College by nine strokes in the 11-team field.
The 1-over 289 ties for the second-lowest team round in the history
of Laker men's golf.
Visconti and Wilcox both had tremendous first round scores for
Clayton as the duo is in a three-way tie for first place with Ian
Hall from Queens at 4-under 68. That ties Wilcox and Visconti for
the sixth-lowest single-round score to par in Clayton State men’s
golf history. Wilcox recorded five birdies for the first round on
the No. 2, 4, 10 14 and 15th
holes, while Visconti recorded birdies on 3, 4,6, 7 and 18 to finish
out the round strong.
In addition to Visconti and Wilcox, Wade Binfield fired a 2-over 74
for Clayton State, while Kevin Duncan and Neil McBride both shot a
7-over 79.
The second and final round of the Southbridge Pirate Invitational
will be on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
