22nd-ranked Clayton State leads Southbridge Pirate Invitational after first round
Lakers shoot impressive 289 to open up six-stroke advantage at mid-way point

SAVANNAH, Ga. February 25, 2008 Fresh off receiving its first Division II national ranking in nearly a decade, the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team followed up the newfound success with an impressive start in the Southbridge Pirate Invitational on Monday.

The 22
nd-ranked Lakers, behind stellar rounds from both Will Wilcox and Jonathan Visconti, shot an impressive one-over par 289 to stake themselves to the first-round lead in the tournament at Soutbridge Golf Course. Clayton State leads Newberry by six strokes, 24th-ranked Lander by seven strokes, Coker by eight strokes and 13th-ranked Georgia College by nine strokes in the 11-team field.

The 1-over 289 ties for the second-lowest team round in the history of Laker men's golf.

Visconti and Wilcox both had tremendous first round scores for Clayton as the duo is in a three-way tie for first place with Ian Hall from Queens at 4-under 68. That ties Wilcox and Visconti for the sixth-lowest single-round score to par in Clayton State men’s golf history. Wilcox recorded five birdies for the first round on the No. 2, 4, 10 14 and 15
th holes, while Visconti recorded birdies on 3, 4,6, 7 and 18 to finish out the round strong.

In addition to Visconti and Wilcox, Wade Binfield fired a 2-over 74 for Clayton State, while Kevin Duncan and Neil McBride both shot a 7-over 79.

The second and final round of the Southbridge Pirate Invitational will be on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
