Clayton State stands strong second following first day at Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Tournament
Lakers Wilcox holds four-stroke lead on the field with a 6-under par 138

AIKEN, S.C. – April 21, 2008 – Never before in the history of the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Tournament have the Clayton State Lakers finished higher than fourth place. That was one time in 1999.

It’s all about to change, however, after the first two rounds of the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Tournament on Monday.

Spearheaded by junior All-American Will Wilcox, 20
th-ranked Clayton State shot two straight rounds of 292 and the Lakers are in a strong second place overall with an 8-over par 584 heading into Tuesday’s final round at Houndslake Country Club. Individually, Wilcox holds a four-stroke lead after shooting a 6-under 138 with rounds of 70 and 68.

Clayton State trails fifth-ranked USC Aiken by three strokes, while the Lakers hold an eight-stroke lead over 10
th-ranked Georgia College and an 11-stroke lead over 12th-ranked Columbus State in the eight-team field.

In addition, the two straight rounds of 292 are the best rounds ever for a Clayton State team in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Individually, Wilcox had two near-flawless rounds for the Lakers with a combined seven birdies to only one bogey. He was tied for the lead after the first round with USC Aiken’s Roberto Diaz at 2-under 70. However, Wilcox took control with a bogey-less second round in which he was 4-under.

Wilcox, however, wasn’t alone in Clayton State’s quest. Sophomore Wade Binfield is currently tied for third overall at 1-under 143 (74-69). He came alive in the second round with six birdies, including four on the final nine holes. Binfield trails Wilcox by five strokes and USC Aiken’s Ashley by one stroke for second place.

Clayton State has two other players currently in the Top 20. Freshman Kevin Duncan shot a 7-over 151 with rounds of 75 and 76, while junior Neil McBride is tied for 18
th with an 8-over 152 (73-79). Junior Jonathan Visconti rounded out the Laker scoring tied for 26th
