Clayton State’s Wilcox qualifies for NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Super
Regionals
Sophomore first Laker
postseason qualifier since 2005
MORROW,
Ga. – APRIL 27, 2007 – Since
transferring to Clayton State from
Alabama-Birmingham at the semester break, Will Wilcox has been a real
difference-maker for the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team. On Friday,
he qualified as an individual for the 2007 NCAA Division II National
Tournament for men’s golf.
Wilcox, a sophomore from Pell City, Ala., is the first Clayton State
golfer to qualify for the NCAA Tournament since 2005. He will compete in
the Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional at the Savannah Quarters Country
Club in Savannah, Ga., on May 7-9.
Joining Wilcox as individual qualifiers are Tusculum’s Chase Carroll and
Chris Wynne, UNC-Pembroke’s Mathew Morrison and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kent
George. Eight teams qualified for the NCAA Super Regional, and six were
from the Peach Belt Conference.
"With his play this spring, Will definitely deserves this bid to the
NCAA Tournament," said Clayton State head coach Barry Harwell. "I know
he’s excited, and if he can keep up his good play, Will has a good
chance at advancing in the NCAA Tournament."
Wilcox enters the NCAA Tournament on a hot streak. After finishes of
37th and 25th
in the Lakers’ first two tournaments of the spring, Wilcox has posted
five straight Top 10 finishes.
He finished tied for eighth at the Rendleman Invitational, tied for
seventh at BMW Collegiate, tied for fourth at the Bobcat Invitational
and second-place finishes at both the North Alabama Spring Classic and
the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Wilcox was one of only two players
to post a sub-par score at the North Alabama Spring Classic and he
finished one stroke off the final lead at the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament.
Wilcox’s 73.8 scoring average is the best ever in a season at Clayton
State. He’s currently ranked 16th
in the nation in Division II in scoring average.
To qualify for the NCAA Division II Finals, Wilcox has be the lowest
individual scorer not on a qualifying team. |
