Clayton State’s Wilcox qualifies for NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Super Regionals
Sophomore first Laker postseason qualifier since 2005

MORROW, Ga. – APRIL 27, 2007 Since transferring to Clayton State from Alabama-Birmingham at the semester break, Will Wilcox has been a real difference-maker for the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team. On Friday, he qualified as an individual for the 2007 NCAA Division II National Tournament for men’s golf.

Wilcox, a sophomore from Pell City, Ala., is the first Clayton State golfer to qualify for the NCAA Tournament since 2005. He will compete in the Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Ga., on May 7-9.

Joining Wilcox as individual qualifiers are Tusculum’s Chase Carroll and Chris Wynne, UNC-Pembroke’s Mathew Morrison and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kent George. Eight teams qualified for the NCAA Super Regional, and six were from the Peach Belt Conference.

"With his play this spring, Will definitely deserves this bid to the NCAA Tournament," said Clayton State head coach Barry Harwell. "I know he’s excited, and if he can keep up his good play, Will has a good chance at advancing in the NCAA Tournament."

Wilcox enters the NCAA Tournament on a hot streak. After finishes of 37th and 25
th in the Lakers’ first two tournaments of the spring, Wilcox has posted five straight Top 10 finishes.

He finished tied for eighth at the Rendleman Invitational, tied for seventh at BMW Collegiate, tied for fourth at the Bobcat Invitational and second-place finishes at both the North Alabama Spring Classic and the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Wilcox was one of only two players to post a sub-par score at the North Alabama Spring Classic and he finished one stroke off the final lead at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Wilcox’s 73.8 scoring average is the best ever in a season at Clayton State. He’s currently ranked 16
th
in the nation in Division II in scoring average.

To qualify for the NCAA Division II Finals, Wilcox has be the lowest individual scorer not on a qualifying team.
