Lakers eighth after first round of Southbridge Pirate Invitational
Wilcox shoots 74 to stand tied for 13th overall

SAVANNAH, Ga. --- FEBRUARY 26, 2007 --- The Clayton State Laker men’s golf team tied its second-best round of the 2006-07 season on Monday with a solid 303 in the opening round of the Southbridge Pirate Invitational at the Southbridge Golf Club.

All five Laker players scored in the 70s, and that was good enough to put Clayton State in eighth place after the first round of the 12-team format. In addition, the Lakers are only nine strokes off the lead.

Clayton State is four strokes behind both Coker and UNC-Pembroke, and eight strokes off the pace of Valdosta State and host Armstrong Atlantic. USC-Upstate, Lander and Georgia College are in a three-way tie for first with a 294.

Individually for Clayton State, sophomore Will Wilcox fired a 2-over-par 74 (36-38) and currently stands tied for 13th overall. On top of that, Wilcox is only six strokes off the overall individual lead. Behind Wilcox for the Lakers, Matt Beall and Neil McBride are both tied for 27th with a 76, while Daniel Sommerville is tied for 37th with a 77.

Rounding out the Clayton State scoring is Matthias Carlander tied for 50th with a 79. Jason Flowers from Valdosta State is the overall leader after the first round with a 4-under 68.

The second and final round of the Southbridge Pirate Invitational is set for Tuesday at Southbridge Golf Club.
