Clayton State’s Wilcox leads Peach Belt Conference Tournament after day one
Lakers sixth overall at 630 following the first two rounds

GREENSBORO, Ga. --- APRIL 16, 2007 --- Monday’s first two rounds of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference men’s golf tournament was more than a mere challenge with the sub-par temperatures and the gusting winds on the Harbor Club Course. However, Clayton State’s Will Wilcox tackled the elements head on and succeeded.

Wilcox, a sophomore who transferred to Clayton State from Division I Alabama-Birmingham at the semester break, has the overall individual lead after the first day of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. He shot a one-over par 73 for the first round, and then countered that with an impressive one-under 71 to stand currently at even-par 144.

Wilcox holds a one-stroke lead over USC-Upstate’s Baxter Culler, a four-stroke lead over Andrew Georgiou from Columbus State and a six-stroke advantage over Columbus State’s Christian Ries and Jake Amos.

In the team competition,
Clayton State is currently sixth after the first day with a 630. The Lakers shot a 314 in the first round and was tied for fifth with both Lander and USC-Aiken and trailed leader Columbus State by only eight strokes. The Lakers hold a two-stroke lead over Lander and 26-stroke advantage over UNC-Pembroke. Clayton State trails USC-Aiken by 14 strokes for fifth place.

Columbus State leads after two rounds with a 605, a three-stroke advantage on USC-Upstate.

In the first round, Wilcox birdied the par 5 fourth hole and the par 4 15th hole, followed by second-round birdies on the fourth, 15th and par 3 17th holes.

In addition to Wilcox, senior Matt Beall is tied for 23rd with a 159 (80-79), while freshman James Martin is 32nd with a 165 (79-86), freshman Daniel Sommerville is tied for 33rd with a 166 (85-81) and sophomore Neil McBride is tied for 37th with a 167 (82-85).

The third and final round of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Tournament is set for Tuesday at Harbor Club.
