Clayton State’s Wilcox leads Peach Belt
Conference Tournament after day one
Lakers sixth overall at 630 following the first two rounds
GREENSBORO,
Ga.
--- APRIL 16, 2007 ---
Monday’s first two
rounds of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference men’s golf tournament was more
than a mere challenge with the sub-par temperatures and the gusting
winds on the Harbor Club Course. However,
Clayton State’s Will
Wilcox tackled the elements head on and succeeded.
Wilcox, a sophomore who transferred to Clayton State from Division I
Alabama-Birmingham at the semester break, has the overall individual
lead after the first day of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. He
shot a one-over par 73 for the first round, and then countered that with
an impressive one-under 71 to stand currently at even-par 144.
Wilcox holds a one-stroke lead over USC-Upstate’s Baxter Culler, a
four-stroke lead over Andrew Georgiou from Columbus State and a
six-stroke advantage over Columbus State’s Christian Ries and Jake Amos.
In the team competition,
Clayton
State
is currently sixth after the first day with a 630. The Lakers shot a 314
in the first round and was tied for fifth with both Lander and USC-Aiken
and trailed leader Columbus State by only eight strokes. The Lakers hold
a two-stroke lead over Lander and 26-stroke advantage over UNC-Pembroke.
Clayton State trails USC-Aiken by 14 strokes for fifth place.
Columbus
State
leads after two rounds with a 605, a three-stroke advantage on USC-Upstate.
In the first round, Wilcox birdied the par 5 fourth hole and the par 4
15th hole, followed by second-round birdies on the fourth, 15th
and par 3 17th holes.
In addition to Wilcox, senior Matt Beall is tied for 23rd
with a 159 (80-79), while freshman James Martin is 32nd with
a 165 (79-86), freshman Daniel Sommerville is tied for 33rd
with a 166 (85-81) and sophomore Neil McBride is tied for 37th
with a 167 (82-85).
The third and final round of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Tournament
is set for Tuesday at Harbor Club. |
