Clayton State golfers compete in prestigious amateur events
Sommerville to play in Links Trophy; Wilcox heads to Alabama State Amateur

MORROW, Ga. – June 6, 2007 – Just because the summer is here doesn’t mean it’s slowdown time for the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team. In fact, two Laker golfers will compete in two prestigious amateur events this weekend.

Rising sophomore Daniel Sommerville will compete in the Links Trophy at his home course – the legendary Old Course of St. Andrews, Scotland, on Friday. Sommerville is a member of the St. Andrews Golf Club, where he was the past club champion. Meanwhile, Will Wilcox, a rising junior from Pell City, Ala., is headed to Mobile, Ala., for the Alabama State Amateur on Thursday.

Sommerville will tee off at 1:50 p.m. (Scotland time) on Thursday in the opening round of the Links Trophy. This tournament was inaugurated in 1989 and is now one of the most prestigious amateur events in world golf. Top golfers today such as Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Philip Price and Paul McGinley all played in the Links Trophy early in their careers and it provided them with valuable tournament experience.

In his freshman season at Clayton State, Sommerville participated in all 10 events for the Lakers with a scoring average of 77. He recorded four Top 20 finishes on the season.

Wilcox advanced for the Alabama State Amateur by shooting a 74 at the state amateur qualifying
round on May 16 at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He tees off at 12:20 p.m. in Thursday’s first round at the Country Club on Mobile.

A transfer this season from Division I Alabama-Birmingham, Wilcox turned in one of the best individual seasons in the history of Clayton State men’s golf.

He finished runner-up at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, qualified for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional and garnered both Division II All-Southeast Regional and Division II honorable mention All-American honors.

Wilcox closed the season in a flourish, recording six straight Top 10 finishes.
