Lakers tied for sixth after opening round of Kiawah Island Invitational
McBride second overall after firing 3-under par 69

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- SEPTEMBER 11, 2006 --- The Barry Harwell era started strong for the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team on Monday at the Kiawah Island Invitational. The Lakers opened the 2006 fall season standing tied for sixth overall following the first round at Cougar Point Golf Club.

It’s the first tournament for Harwell as Laker head coach. He replaced veteran Bob Hill over the summer.

Clayton
State shot a 14-over par 303 for the first round, putting it tied for sixth overall with defending NCAA Division II national champion USC-Aiken. Both teams trail Armstrong Atlantic by seven strokes and Presbyterian by eight strokes. Lander leads after the first round with a 292, one stroke ahead of Belmont Abbey and two ahead of Washburn.

This is a 16-team tournament field.

Individually for the Lakers, Neil McBride had a tremendous first round, shooting a 3-under 69. That puts him in sole possession of second overall, and he trails leader Baxter Culler from USC-Upstate by two strokes. Other scores for the Lakers include Mathias Carlander tied for 35th with a 77, Matt Beall tied for 38th with a 78, Daniel Sommerville tied for 44th with a 79 and James Martin tied for 56th with an 81.

The second and final round of the
Kiawah Island Invitational is set for Tuesday at Cougar Point Golf Club.
