Former
Clayton State golfer Adam Short
qualifies for 2005 Canadian Open
Surrey, British Columbia ---
Former Clayton State University golfer Adam Short earned a berth to compete with
the world's best golfers at the 2005 Bell Canadian Open Monday by winning the
British Columbia regional qualifier at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club in Surrey,
B.C.
Short,
a native of Vineland, Ontario, fired a five-under 67 at Hazelmere, meaning he
will bypass the final qualifying phase for Canada's national open championship
set for September 5-11 at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. The
world's best professional golfers will be competing for $4.9 million at the 2005
Canadian Open.
"It's
been a lifetime goal of mine to play in the Bell Canadian Open," said
Short. "The opportunity is huge. When that door opens, you have to take
advantage of it."
Twenty-two
other players, including 16 Canadian Tour players advanced to stage two of Bell
Canadian Open qualifying by finishing even par 72 or better. The final qualifier
is set for Monday, September 5 at Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey, B.C.
Playing
on the Canadian tour, Short has made five of seven cuts in 2005 with his best
finish this season coming at the 2005 Foster Farms California Classic, where he
placed 28th at 6-under par. His top career finish on the tour came in
2004 when he was the runner-up at the Barton Creek Austin Canadian Tour
Challenge.
At Clayton State, Short was named
a 1999 Golf Coaches Association All-America. He finished the 1999 season with a school-record 7-under 65 in the
final round of the NCAA Division II National Championships to place fifth
overall. Short led the 1999 squad with four top-five finishes, including
medalist honors at the University of North Alabama Spring Classic. He recorded
scores of par-or-better in 10 of his 31 rounds during the season, finishing with
a 74.42 stroke average, second lowest in school history.
Clayton State, which finished
the 1999 year with a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Division II National
Championships, climbed from the midst of the unranked all the way to No. 11,
marking the highest final ranking by any team in school history.

State golfer Steven Sanders named
2005 Academic All-America for District III
Morrow, GA ---
May 26, 2005 --- Clayton State University golfer Steven Sanders was named to
the 2005 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Men’s At-Large team for
District III.
A junior from
Snellville, GA, Sanders is a two-year letterwinner and currently has a 4.0 grade
point average. He also had Clayton State’s second lowest scoring average in
2004-05, and placed 27th in the team’s season-ending event, the
Peach Belt Conference Championships.
The At-Large
designation encompasses all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA schools in
Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. It also includes
a number of sports besides golf, which are volleyball, rifle, gymnastics, sking,
water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse and tennis.
Other academic
honors in 2004-05 for Sanders include him being named Clayton State’s Most
Outstanding Marketing Student and receiving the H. Mason Barfield Award, given
to the male student-athlete with the highest grade point average.
By being named to
the Academic All-America District III team, Sanders becomes eligible to be later
named an Academic All-America, which includes nominees from all eight districts.
Sanders is the second Laker to be named All-District this season, as Clayton State senior women’s soccer player Nkiru Okosieme was also named to the Academic All-America District III team.

at NCAA Division II Southeast Golf Regional

May 4, 2005 --- Clayton College & State University golfer Matt Beall
shot a third round 78 Wednesday after opening rounds of 79 and 80 to finish tied
for 27th at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Bull Creek Golf Course in
Columbus, GA.
Beall (Newnan, GA)
was selected to compete in the event as an individual with the chance to advance
to the NCAA Division II National Championships if he could have been the top
individual finisher not affiliated with a team advancing to nationals.
Defending NCAA
national champion and PBC champ USC Aiken earned the region’s automatic bid,
finishing at 9-over par for the three rounds with a team score of 887. Armstrong
State finished four shots back at 891. Pfeiffer University won and earned the
NCAA Atlantic Regional bid, which was also played at Bull Creek Course, at
49-over par.
The strength of
Clayton State’s Southeast Region showed, as the three at-large bids awarded
from two regions will all come from the Southeast Regional. PBC teams AASU,
GC&SU and Columbus State all three secured at-large bids for the national
tournament, finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.
USCA’s Scott
Brown edged teammate Dane Burkhart by one shot for low medalist honors,
finishing with an even par score for three rounds on the on the par 72,
6,861-yard course.

shot a second round 81 Tuesday after opening with a 79 and is currently tied for
29th at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Bull Creek Golf Course in
Columbus, GA.
Beall (Newnan, GA)
was selected to compete in the event as an individual. The top individual that
is not affiliated with one of the four teams that advance from the 16-team
Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional qualify for the NCAA Division II National
Championships.
The final round of
the tournament will be played on Wednesday on the par 72, 6,861-yard course.
Defending NCAA
national champion and PBC champ USC Aiken leads the event with a 14-over par 590
team score after two rounds. The PBC’s Armstrong State had the low team round
on Tuesday, firing a 7-over par 295 in the second round.
USCA’s Scott
Brown took over the top on the leader board, shooting a 1-under par 71 on
Tuesday after shooting an even par 72 on Wednesday. USCA first round leader Dane
Burkart shot a second round 74 and it tied for second with Armstrong State’s
Jonathan Cox, one shot back from the lead.

Clayton
State coach Bob Hill named
2005 Peach Belt golf Coach of the Year
Savannah,
GA --- April 19, 2005 ---
Head Clayton College & State University men’s golf coach Bob Hill has been
named the 2004-05 Peach Belt Conference Golf Coach of the Year.
In
his eighth season, Hill led the Lakers to four top-10 finishes this year,
including a seventh place finish at the Presbyterian Intercollegiate and a ninth
place finish at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate. He becomes the first Clayton
State coach to receive the Coach of the Year award.
Hill
has led the Laker golf program to the NCAA Division II Regional
Championships four of the last seven seasons. The program’s top season was a
seventh place finish at the 1999 National Championships. The Lakers placed
fourth in the PBC tournament that same season, its best finish in the conference
event.
Clayton
State ended its season on Tuesday, placing seventh in the Peach Belt tournament
in Savannah, GA. Defending national champion and No. 1 the University of South
Carolina Aiken won the 2005 PBC Championship.

State golfers place seventh in
2005 Peach Belt Conference Championships
Savannah, GA --- April 19, 2005 ---
The Clayton College & State University men’s golf team shot a final round
of 313 to finish seventh in the 2005 Peach Belt Conference Golf Championship at
Southbridge Country Club in Savannah, GA.
Defending national champion and No. 1 ranked the
University of South Carolina Aiken fired a 4-under par final round 284 to capture the
2005 Championship by eight strokes over host Armstrong Atlantic State
University. Aiken opened the final round at 8-under after rounds of 287 and 281
on Monday. Armstrong State entered the final round, four shots back and closed
to a single shot on front nine before the Pacers pulled away on the back.
Clayton State’s round of 313 comes after opening
rounds of 323 and 312 on the first day. The Peach Belt Conference brings to an
end the Lakers 2004-05 season.
For Clayton State, senior Steven Sanders led the way
in 27th with rounds of 75,
79 and 81. Junior Andrew Dagneau tied for 28th after rounds of 84, 74
and 78. Sophomore Matt Beall finished 33rd with rounds of 81, 79 and 78.
Junior Danyel McKibben placed 34th after
rounds of 83, 80 and 77, while freshman Josh Monk finished 35th after
rounds of 85, 86 and 80.
USCA’s Dane Burkhart's took low medalist honors, his third
individual title of 2005. The PBC Co-Player of the Year carded 16 birdies in the
tournament, leading all players with an 11-under-par 205 total. His teammate
Brown, who shared PBC Player of the Year honors, finished second individually
after a final-round 68 and placed two strokes back with a nine-under-par 207
total.
By virtue of their PBC Tournament title, the Pacers
earn the league's automatic bid to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Men's Golf
Championships. The Atlantic/Southeast Regional will take place on May 3-4 at the
Bull Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ga., and several other PBC schools will now
await word of possible at-large bids to the Championships.

State golfers tie for 9th at
Carolina Sands Intercollegiate
White Lake, NC
--- April 4, 2005 --- The Clayton College & State University men’s
golf team tied for ninth Sunday at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate at the
Carolina Sands Golf Club in White Lake, NC.
The Lakers opened
the tournament with a round 320, followed by shooting 321 on the second day on
the par 72, 6,925-yard course. Coker College won the tournament with rounds of
313 and 306, six shots ahead of Belmont Abbey College, finishing with rounds of
309 and 316.
Clayton State sophomore Matt Beall (Newnan, GA) led the way
for the Lakers, tying for sixth in the tournament with rounds of 78 and 77, five
shots back from the leader. Junior Andrew Dagneau (Kitchener, Ontario) posted
the team’s second best score with rounds of 79 and 82, tying for 31st.
Freshman Josh Monk
(Stockbridge, GA) tied for 34th with rounds of 83 and 79, followed by
junior Steven Sanders (Snellville, GA) tying for 44th with rounds of
81 and 83. Freshman Danyel McKibben (Conyers, GA) tied for 54th with
rounds of 82 and 85.
Clayton State will
return to action on April 18-19 for the Peach Belt Conference Championships
hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University at Southbridge Golf Club in
Savannah, GA.

Clayton State golf place 15th
at Bobcat Invitational; to play April 2-3 in Carolina Sands tournament
EATONTON,
Georgia – March 22, 2005 --- Heavy
rain and dangerous lightning suspended play in Tuesday’s final round of the
Bobcat Invitational with the Clayton College & State University men’s golf
team in 15th place in the event hosted by Georgia College & State
University at the Golf Course at Cuscowilla.
Since
the final round was not able to be finished, GC&SU was declared the winner
of the tournament after leading the 15-team field during Monday’s first two
rounds. GC&SU opened the tournament on Monday with an even par round of 280.
The Bobcats shot a 294 in the second round to finish with a 14-over 574 score.
Armstrong
Atlantic State University and the University of North Alabama tied for second
with two-round scores of 582, eight shots back of GC&SU. North Alabama
bounced back from a 300 in round one, to register a 282 in the
second round, while AASU shot rounds of 293 and 289.
Clayton State shot rounds of 312 and
315 in the tournament and was led by sophomore Matt Beall and junior Steve
Sanders, tying for 56th with two-round scores of 154. They each had
rounds of 75 and 79 on Monday. Freshman David Lineback finished with a two-round
score of 161, tying for 74th after rounds of 80 and 81.
Juniors Danyel McKibben and Andrew
Dagneau each tied for 77th with two-round totals of 163. McKibben had
rounds of 82 and 81, while Dagneau had rounds of 87 and 76.
AASU’s
Tripp Coggins took home medalist honors for the second straight tournament after
carding rounds of 70 and 65 on the par-70 course to finish with a five-under
135. Coggins also led the field with 10 birdies. UNA’s Brad Conner took second
place with rounds of 70 and 69 to finish with a one-under par 139.
Clayton
State will return to action on Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3 in the Carolina Sands
Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by the University of North Carolina
Pembroke at the Carolina Sands course in Whitelake, NC.

--- March 8, 2005 --- The Clayton College & State University men’s
golf team finished 10th Tuesday in a rain-shortened 2005 Richard
Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, NC.
The second and
final round on Tuesday was postponed due to the weather. Clayton State shot an
opening round of 309 and tied with Peach Belt Conference foe the University of
North Carolina Pembroke out of 17 teams. Presbyterian College won with a team
score of 279 on the par-71, 6,665 yard course.
Junior Danyel
McKibben (Covington, GA) was the team’s top finisher, tying for 10th
after firing a two-over par 73 in the opening round. Sophomore Matt Beall
(Newnan, GA) tied for 28th after a round of 76, while junior Andrew
Dagneau (Kitchener, Ontario) tied for 49th with a round of 78.
Freshman Josh Monk
(Stockbridge, GA) and junior Steven Sanders (Snellville, GA) rounded out the
scoring for Clayton State with rounds of 82 and 83, respectively.
Presbyterian’s
Ben Karns won the tournament with a four-under par 67 on the opening day.
Clayton State will
return to action on March 21-22 in the Bobcat Invitational in Eatonton, GA. The
tournament is hosted by GC&SU at the Golf Club at Cuscowilla.

golf team opened is currently tied for 10th place at the 2005 Richard
Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, NC.
Clayton State shot
an opening round of 309 and is tied with Peach Belt Conference foe the
University of North Carolina Pembroke in the 10th spot out of 17
teams. Presbyterian College leads with a team score of 279 on the par-71, 6,665
yard course. The Lakers are eight shots back from fifth place Grand Valley State
University.
Junior Danyel

Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate

City, FL --- February 9, 2005 --- The Clayton College
& State University men’s golf team opened its spring season earlier this
week, tying for 12th in the Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate at the
Hombre Golf Club in Panama City, FL.
The Lakers opened
the tournament with a round 316 and was in sixth place after the first day in
the 15-team field before falling back on the second day, shooting a round of
321. Defending national champion the University of South Carolina Aiken won the
tournament in a playoff over Columbus State University on Tuesday.
Aiken and Columbus
State, the first round leader, finished with two-round scores of 595. GC&SU
finished third in the event with a two-round score of 597 and had the lowest
medallist in John Tillery with a 3-over par score of 145.
Clayton State
sophomore Matt Beall (Newnan, GA) led the way for the Lakers with rounds of 75
and 78, followed by junior Daniel McKibben (Covington, GA) with rounds 78 and
79.
Junior Steven
Sanders (Snellville, GA) had rounds of 78 and 87, followed by junior Andrew

at Presbyterian Intercollegiate

October 12, 2004 --- The Clayton College & State University men’s golf
team followed up its first round score of 307 with another 307 on Tuesday to
finish in a tie for 7th at the 12th annual Presbyterian
College Intercollegiate at Musgrove Mill Golf Course in Clinton, SC.
The Lakers tied for
seventh with Valdosta State University, host Presbyterian and Catawba College in
the field of 15 teams. Defending NCAA Division II National Champion and Peach
Belt Conference opponent the University of South Carolina Aiken won the
tournament with rounds of 285 and 294, 14 shots ahead of PBC rival Georgia
College & State University, who had rounds of 297 and 296.
Coker College
placed third with rounds of 307 and 297, followed by Armstrong Atlantic State
University, Pfeiffer University and Francis Marion University, placing fourth
through sixth, respectively, on the par-72, 6,806 yard course.
Sophomore Matt
Beall (Newnan, GA) had the low round and finish in the tournament for the
Lakers, tying for 11th. Beall fired a 1-under par 71 after opening
the tournament with a 77. Junior Steve Sanders (Snellville, GA) shot a 2-over
par 74 in the second round to tie for 31st after opening the
tournament with an 80.
Junior Andrew Dagneau (Kitchener, Canada) tied for 37th
after shooting rounds of 75 and 80, while freshman David Lineback (Douglasville,
GA) tied for 44th after rounds of 75 and 82.
Freshman Josh Monk (Stockbridge, GA) finished 72nd after two
rounds of 84.
Georgia College
& State University’s John Tillery won low medalist honors, shooting a
three-under par 69 in the final round after a 1-under 71 in the opening round.
He narrowly defeated USC Aiken’s Scott Brown, who had rounds of 71 and 69.
First round leader USCA’s Chris McAlister, who shot a 4-under par 68 in the
opening round, shot a 76 on Tuesday to tie for fourth.
The tournament
marks the end of the fall season for Lakers. The Clayton State team will resume
play spring semester with the second half of its season.

at 2004 Cougar Invitational

October 5, 2004 --- The Clayton College & State University men’s golf
team shot its three best rounds of the season Monday and Tuesday to place 17th
in the 2004 AFLAC/Cougar Invitational in Columbus, GA.
The Clayton State
team shot a final round 308 after opening the tournament on Monday with a first
round score of 306, followed by a second round of 305 on the par 72, 6,936-yard
Bull Creek West Golf Course.
The University of
South Carolina-Aiken, the defending NCAA Division II champions, won the event by
four strokes shooting a three-under par 285 in the final round. The field of
teams included the last two national championship squads and several team ranked
among the best in the country.
Florida Gulf Coast
University placed second at two-over par for the event, matching USCA with a 285
in the final round. Valdosta State University finished third, 12 shots back
after a 295 in the third round.
For the Lakers,
sophomore Matt Beall (Newnan, GA) led the way, tying for 35th
in the event. He opened the tourney with a 2-over par 74, followed by a
76 and a 75. Junior Andrew Dagneau (Kitchener, Canada) tied for 62nd,
sandwiching a 2-over par 74 in the second round with opening and final rounds of
78.
Junior Steve
Sanders (Snellville, GA) had the low round for Clayton State, shooting an even
par 72 in the first round before coming back with an 83 in the second round and
a 76 in the third round to tie for 64th. Freshman David Lineback
(Douglasville, GA) finished 83rd after rounds of 81, 76 and 81,
while freshman Josh Monk (Stockbridge, GA) finished 89th after rounds
of 80, 79 and 88.
Florida Gulf
Coast’s Joseph Lamielle beat teammate David Steele to take low medalist
honors. Lamielle shot a 3-under par 69 in the final round to finish at 8-under
par, three shots ahead of Steele, who shot a 4-under par 68 in the final round.
Clayton State will return to action
on October 10-11 in the Presbyterian Intercollegiate at Musgrove Mill Golf
Course in Clinton, SC.

11th at
season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational
Kiawah Island,
SC --- September 8, 2004 --- Playing in harsh conditions due to the remnants
of Hurricane Frances, the Clayton College & State University men’s golf
team finished 11th in the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational
in Kiawah Island, S.C. Tuesday.
The Clayton State
team shot a first round score of 343 on Monday, followed by a 355 on the second
day in the inaugural event, hosted by
the University of South Carolina Aiken. at the 6,887-yard, par 72 Cougar Point
Golf Course.
Defending national
champion and Peach Belt Conference opponent USC-Aiken ran away with the event,
shooting a second round score of 299, the only team round under 300 for the
tournament. The Pacers were tied with the University of North Carolina Pembroke
after the first day with rounds of 308.
UNCP was the
runner-up after a second round of 319, while Georgia College & State
University finished third after rounds of 316 and 312.
Sophomore Matt
Beall (Newnan, GA) had the low finish for the Lakers, tying for 16th
after rounds of 81 and 77. Andrew Dagneau (Kit

Brown and James Browning tied for low medalist honors with three-over par scores
of 147 for the two rounds. Browning shot a tourney best 69 in the final round,
the only round under 70 for the tournament.
