Morrow, GA
--- May 2, 2003 --- For the fourth time in its six
seasons of NCAA Division II golf, the Clayton College & State University
squad has been selected to compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
The Lakers will be one of 16 teams and 10 individuals at the 2003 NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional

Each regional will have eight teams and five individuals competing.
“I’ve
had better players and better students as a team, but this is the best group of
young men I have coached in my six years,” said head coach Bob Hill. “They
don’t quit and that is why they have earned their way into the regional
tournament.”
Clayton
State is one of seven Peach Belt Conference schools participating in the
tournament. PBC Champion USC Aiken is the top seed, followed by Armstrong
Atlantic State, and Francis Marion. Presbyterian College, from the South
Atlantic Conference, is the No. 4 seed, followed by GC&SU, Columbus State

missed a tournament in four years, has won two tournaments and has six top 10
finishes in his career. He has two top 10 finishes this year, placing third in
the Presbyterian Intercollegiate and 10th in the PBC Championships.
Guiendon, a
transfer from Life University, was one of the team’s steadiest players down
the stretch and helped lead the Lakers to the region competition. Guiendon
finished with the team’s second lowest scoring average of 76 and has shot a 75
or better in his last seven rounds of play.
Junior Jess Shirley
(Newnan, GA) also closed the season strong and has a 77 scoring average on the

tournament.
Beebe finished the
season with a 77 scoring average after opening the season with a bang. He shot a
3-under par 141 at the Johnny Palmer/Old North State tournament in the
season-opener, which was Clayton State’s third best 36-hole tournament score.
Armour played in
eight-of-nine tournaments for the Lakers with his best round, a two-over par 74,
coming at the Pfeiffer Intercollegiate and at the Peach Belt Conference
Championships.
Clayton State last
competed in the regional tournament as a team in 2000, finishing 16th.

Laker
golf team set
to open 2003 spring season in Hombre Intercollegiate in Panama City, FL
MORROW, GA --- The Clayton College & State University men’s golf team had several top finishes in the Fall of 2002, and on Monday, the Lakers will tee off its spring season, looking to keep the momentum rolling.
Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bob Hill, who led the Lakers to a seventh place finish in the NCAA Division II National Championships in 1999, the Lakers will open the spring season in the Hombre Intercollegiate in Panama City, FL.
The tournament features six teams from Clayton State’s Peach Belt Conference, including last year’s PBC champion and NCAA Southeast Region champ, the University of South Carolina Aiken. The tourney also features six teams that are ranked in the top 25 of last fall’s Precept/Golf Coaches Association of America Men’s Golf poll.
“We are looking forward to the second half of the season after making some strides in the fall,” said head coach Bob Hill. “We play in the toughest region and in some of the most competitive tournaments in the country, and if we are able to compete against these teams, we will be right up there among the nation’s best.”
The Lakers are currently ranked 47th in the country in the latest Golf Stat Division II poll and will have five tournaments on the slate this spring. Clayton State’s top finish in the fall came in the Presbyterian Intercollegiate, finishing sixth out of 18 teams.
The squad will be led this spring by four-year letterwinner Brennan Cass (Fergus, Ontario). Cass had a team-low 74.2 scoring average during the fall in nine rounds of play, which included one top 10 finish. He placed third in the Presbyterian Intercollegiate, shooting a 1-over par, 145 (72-73), the eighth best 36-hole score in Clayton State history.
Cass was chosen last spring to play in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional as an individual. He placed 31st in the event, which featured some of the nation’s top golfers, with a 7-over par 223 in three rounds of play (72-74-77).
In addition to Cass, the Lakers will have one more senior on the club as Bob Guiendon (Warner Robins) joins CCSU for his final season after playing three years at Life University in Marietta, GA. Guiendon had a 75.6 stroke average in seven rounds of play this fall with his top finish, being a three-over par 146 (74-73) at the Pfeiffer Intercollegiate in Sneeds Ferry, N.C.
The Lakers have a trio juniors for the 2003 spring season in Derick Ayers (Dawsonville, GA), Sergio Prieto (Manizales, Colombia) and Jess Shirley (Newnan, GA).
Ayers, who along with Guiendon, transferred from Life University, participated in three events in the fall and carded his best and a team best 14-over par in the three-round Cougar Invitational in Columbus, GA, with rounds of 75-77-78.
Prieto, a junior college transfer from Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, AL, played in only one tournament in the fall before being sidelined with an injury. He shot a round of the 73 in the season-opening Johnny Palmer/Old North State Invitational in Badin, NC.
