Clayton State men open with impressive 125-59 exhibition rout over Martinique
Greene paces seven Lakers in double-figures with 18 points

Fans got a sneak peak of the 2009-10 version of the Clayton State men’s basketball team on Friday night, and left the Athletics and Fitness Center impressed and entertained at the same time.

Playing their first exhibition game of the season against the Golden Star from the island of Martinique, the Lakers turned on the afterburners with an astonishing 125-59 rout at the Athletics and Fitness Center. This is the first of two exhibition games for Clayton State, the next coming on Nov. 18 against BASELINE USA.

Clayton State unveiled a new more up-tempo style of play from recent seasons. The Lakers still played their vaunted full-court pressure defense, forcing a whopping 48 Martinique turnovers and scoring 67 points off turnovers in the process. However, Clayton State pushed the ball more effectively offensively, shooting 54 percent from the field for the game and 41 percent from 3-point range.

Clayton State scored the game’s first 17 points, eventually building its first-half lead to 42 points. The Lakers’ largest lead in the second half was 66 points, including the final outcome.

Seven players scored in double-figures for Clayton State as the Lakers spread the wealth offensively. Sophomore forward Torrin Greene paced Clayton State with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field, connecting on his first seven field goals. Junior forward Brandon Robinson was impressive in his Laker debut with 17 points, as was senior guard Robert Murry with 16 points and five assists.

In addition, junior guard Jonathan Austin scored 16 points off the bench, while senior forward Jaquas Dobbs and junior point guard Timothy Downs each scored 12 points, with Downs also dishing out nine assists in his Clayton State debut. Another Laker newcomer, junior center Armon Jones, scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Showing its superior depth, Clayton State scored 58 points off the bench.
