Clayton State men battle Baseline USA in final exhibition tune-up for 2008-09
Lakers keep preparing for season opener next Thursday against West Georgia

MORROW, Ga. – November 13, 2008 – The Clayton State Laker men’s basketball team will have its final tune-up for the 2008-09 season on Friday night when they play host to Baseline USA at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

This is the second and final exhibition game prior to the start of the regular season for Clayton State. The Lakers rolled to an impressive 87-30 rout over the Martinique Golden Star last Friday.

However, Baseline USA will be completely opposite of Martinique. Unlike Martinique, which was composed of junior-level players, Baseline USA is composed of area former collegiate players, ranging from Division I to NAIA, that are now playing professionally in the WBA, the SEBL, the CBA and overseas..

This is the second time in the last three seasons that Clayton State has played Baseline USA in a preseason contest. The Lakers won 101-93 prior to the 2006-07. In fact, this is the sixth time the two teams have played (Clayton State leads 4-1), only once has the final score been more than 10 points.

"The Baseline Warriors are an excellent travel team of ex-collegiate stars with pro experience," said Clayton State head coach Gordon Gibbons. "David Archer does a good job, and we will have our defense tested this game."

Tested the Lakers will indeed be. Baseline is loaded with former collegiate standouts ranging from NCAA Division I to the NAIA levels. The most notable players on a local level include former Georgia guard Adrian Jones, former Tennessee State forward Tony Cook and former Virginia Tech forward Joe Hamilton.

Ironically, recent former Lakers Brandon Kelley (2005-07) and Michael Sloan (2004-08) will dress out for Baseline and square off against their former Clayton State teammates.

Clayton State is coming off an impressive showing against Martinique as the Lakers shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range. Senior wing Bernard Fields paced a balanced Clayton State scoring attack with 18 points on five 3-point baskets, while Freddie Williams scored 14 points on 5-for-6 from the field in his Laker debut, and Jaquas Dobbs scored 11 points.

Clayton State officially opens the 2008-09 season at home on Nov. 20 against in-state rival West Georgia.
