Local prep standout Green inks with
Clayton State men’s basketball
6-foot-7
power forward brings size and athleticism to Laker fold for 2007-08
season
MORROW,
Ga. – May 18, 2007 –
In his continuing quest to attract more local talent to his
nationally-ranked NCAA Division II men’s basketball program, Clayton
State men’s head coach Gordon Gibbons landed a huge catch this week
with the signing of power forward Torrin Green out of North Clayton
High School in College Park, Ga.
Green is the second signee of the Laker recruiting class for
2007-08, joining shooting guard Freddie Williams from Seminole
Community College who signed during the fall. The 6-foot-7, 205-pounder will add more size, skill and
athleticism to an already-talented Clayton State frontcourt.
He joins a Laker team coming off arguably its best season in program
history in 2006-07, posting 24-8 overall record and advancing to the
second round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Clayton
State will be replacing six superb seniors from this past season,
and the addition of Green is a good starting point.
“We are excited that Torrin has selected Clayton State,” said
Gibbons, who is 121-57 in six seasons at Clayton State. “He’s a fine
young man and a great addition both athletically and academically.
We know his will fit in well with both our returning players and our
2007-08 recruiting class.”
Green lettered three seasons under head coach Martisse Troup at
North Clayton, and really came into his own as a senior this season.
Green averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots a game
in pacing North Clayton to a 24-10 mark and advancing to the “Final
Four” of the Georgia Class AAAA State Tournament.
It was in the state semifinals against eventual state champion
Tucker that Green had his shining moment. He recorded the first
triple-double of his career with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10
blocked shots in the Eagles’ 61-56 defeat against Tucker at the
Gwinnett Arena. In fact, he didn’t miss a field goal attempt in the
entire second half.
Green was selected both All-Region 4AAAA and All-Southern Crescent
by the Clayton News-Daily this season. Graduating with a 3.1
grade-point average, he plans to major in either psychology or
business at Clayton State.
