Lewis records double-double 18 points, 15 rebounds as Lakers even
up at 3-3 overall
MORROW,
Ga. – December 5, 2007 –
They needed a half to get on track, but once on
track, there was nothing stopping the Clayton State Laker men’s
basketball team on Wednesday night against visiting Carver.
Spearheaded by sophomore forward Will Lewis’s double-double,
Clayton State made it two victories in a row with a convincing
104-64 rout over Carver at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The
victory was the second straight for Clayton State, now 3-3 overall
on the season.
It marks the first 100-point game for the Lakers since last
season’s 103-58 victory over Carver, and the seventh under head
coach Gordon Gibbons. It’s the most points a game for the Lakers
since a 109-70 victory over Bluefield in the 2005-06 season.
After a first half in which Carver led by as much as five points
and trimmed the Laker lead to one point at halftime, Clayton State
set a team single-game record for points in a half with 67 in the
second half. In addition, the Lakers shot a sizzlin’ 67 percent from
the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range.
Carver kept the Laker lead within single digits for the first
three minutes before Clayton State began to pull away. A Michael
Sloan 3-point basket gave the Lakers a 55-43 lead with 16:17
remaining, and another 3-point basket by Lewis stretched the lead to
58-45 at the 15:38 mark.
Carver never got closer than 12 points after that. Clayton State,
meanwhile, went on a 14-2 run over a three-minute stretch to take
control. Bernard Fields started the rally with a jump shot and a
3-point basket, followed by a breakaway dunk by Sloan and a lay-up
by Jerome Boyd to give the Lakers a 73-49 lead with 12:12 remaining.
Late in the game, the Lakers stretched the lead past 25 points.
Jonathan Austin scored on a driving lay-up, followed by another
lay-up by Armel Traore Dit Nignan to give Clayton State a 98-61 lead
with 1:16 remaining. The Lakers then hit the century mark when
Jordan Windisch scored on a driving lay-up with 50 seconds
remaining.
Lewis had his best game yet in a Clayton State uniform with 18
points, 15 rebounds and five assists as a total of six Lakers
reached double-figures in scoring. Fields also scored 18 points off
the bench, followed by Sloan and Brian Kelly each with 15 points and
Boyd and Traore Dit Nignan each with 11 points. Williams also dished
out 10 assists, while Sloan had seven assists.
For the game, Clayton State shot an impressive 57 percent from
the field, while the Lakers out-rebounded Carver 54-28. Defensively,
the Lakers held Carver to 36 percent shooting from the field,
including only 21 percent from 3-point range.
Clayton State now prepares for a much-anticipated rematch at
in-state rival West Georgia on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. West
Georgia thumped the Lakers 84-58 at the Athletics and Fitness Center
back on Nov. 20.
