BRENT BUCHANAN
Men's Assistant Basketball Coach

Brent Buchanan enters his seventh season with the Clayton State men's basketball program after coaching under head coach Gordon Gibbons for both the American Basketball Association's (ABA) Tampa Bay Thunderdawgs and at Florida Southern. Overall, he has worked at Gibbons' side for 10 seasons.

Buchanan serves as the program's director of basketball operations, overseeing and managing all aspects of the men's basketball program and office. His duties include opponent scouting, film breakdown and analysis, recruiting, strength and conditioning, compliance and developing the Laker post players. He also coordinates all of Clayton State's summer camps, and Gibbons' camps both in Florida and overseas in Belgium and Martinique.

Along with Gibbons and former assistant coach Cory Baldwin, Buchanan has been responsible for assembling each of the last five Clayton State recruiting classes that has been ranked amongst the nation's best at the NCAA Division II level. Since arriving with Gibbons at Clayton State in the spring of 2001, Buchanan has helped the Lakers average 19 victories a season. That includes two 20-victory seasons in the last three years, and the program's first Peach Belt Conference championship in the 2001-02 season.

In addition to serving under Gibbons here at Clayton State, Buchanan also coached two seasons with his mentor for two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-00) at Florida Southern. During the final season (1999-00), the duo helped lead the Moccasins to the most successful season ever at Florida Southern with a 32-2 mark, a No. 1 ranking nationally at the Division II level and an appearance in the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

Prior to moving to the collegiate level at both Florida Southern and Clayton State, Buchanan had a successful five-year run at the high school level as head coach at Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Fla. Despite taking over as head coach at the age of 22, Buchanan is the winningest head coach ever at Eau Gallie, leading his team to the state tournament twice. Twelve of Buchanan's players at Eau Gallie went on to play at the collegiate level.

A 1995 graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science, Buchanan was a standout player under head coach Don Smith at Brevard Community College in Florida.
