Buchanan
serves as the program’s director of basketball
operations, and he is responsible for overseeing and
managing all aspects of the men’s basketball program and
office. His duties include opponent scouting, opponent
film breakdown and analysis, recruiting, weights and
conditioning, compliance and developing post players. He
also coordinates all of Clayton State’s camps, Coach
Gibbons’ Florida camps and his overseas camps in Belgium
and Martinique.
Along
with Gibbons and fellow assistant coach Cory Baldwin,
Buchanan has been responsible for assembling each of the last
five Clayton State recruiting classes that ranked among
the nation’s best.
Buchanan
has help lead the Lakers to two 20-victory seasons in the
last three years, including a 22-8 record in 2003-04, the
second best record in school history. The Lakers have
averaged 19 wins over the last four seasons and have
finished in the top five in the 12-team Peach Belt
Conference each season, which includes winning 2001-02 PBC
Championship.
In
addition to being alongside Coach Gibbons at Clayton
State, Buchanan also coached with
Gibbons during the most successful season ever at Florida
Southern. The program was 32-2 in 1999-00, ranked No. 1 in
the country, and advanced to the Division II Elite Eight.
He also coordinated and oversaw Florida Southern's
successful summer tour in Europe. During the tour, Florida
Southern played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg
and France, beating two Division professional clubs
compiling a 6-2 record.
Prior
to working as an assistant at FSC, Buchanan served as head
coach at Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, FL for five
years. Buchanan, who was one of the youngest at 22 to be
named a head men’s high school basketball coach in
Florida, is the all-time winningest coach at Eau Gallie
and led the squad to two state playoff appearances and an
era of notoriety as a solid program around the state.
Twelve of his players went on to play at the collegiate
level.
Buchanan
has traveled extensively throughout his coaching career.
Conducting of overseas basketball camps, coaching in the ABA
and his current collegiate recruiting duties has enabled
him to visit many states and most major cities across America, as well as,
countries like Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany,
Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Puerto Rico,
Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Guadaloupe and
Martinique.
A
graduate of the University of Central Florida in with a
bachelor's degree social science, Buchanan also starred as a junior college player
at Brevard Community College in Florida, playing for coach
Don Smith.
