Brent Buchanan
ASSISTANT COACH

Buchanan enters his third season with the Clayton College State men’s basketball program after coaching under Gibbons both with the American Basketball Association’s (ABA) Tampa Bay Thunderdawgs and at Florida Southern College. He has worked at Coach Gibbons’ side for more than five years.

Brent serves as the program’s director of basketball operations, and he is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the men’s basketball program and office. His duties include: opponent scouting, opponent film breakdown and analysis, recruiting, weights and conditioning, compliance, camp coordinator for all of Clayton State and Coach Gibbons’ Florida camps, as well as, coaching and developing post players.

Along with Gibbons and fellow assistant coach Cory Baldwin, Buchanan is responsible for assembling each of the last three Clayton State recruiting classes that ranked among the nation’s best.

Buchanan coached with Gibbons during the most successful season ever at Florida Southern. The program was 32-2, ranked No. 1 in the country, and advanced to the Division II Elite Eight. He also coordinated and oversaw Florida Southern’s successful summer tour in Europe. During the tour, Florida Southern played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France beating two Division I professional clubs.

Prior to working as an assistant at FSC, Buchanan served as head coach at Eau Gaille High School in Melbourne, FL for five years. Buchanan, who was one of the youngest at 22 to be named a head men’s high school basketball coach in Florida, is the all-time winningest coach at Eau Gaille and led the squad to two state playoff appearances and an era of notoriety as a solid program around the state.

Buchanan, who is known as Coach "B" by the players, has kept in touch with his former players from Eau Gaille, Florida Southern, the ABA and Clayton State. Twelve of his players at Eau Gaille went on to play collegiately, including Matt Walters, who starred for the 2002 national champion University of Miami football team and currently plays for the New York Jets.

Buchanan has traveled extensively throughout his coaching career. Coaching in the ABA and his recruiting duties has enabled him to visit most major cities across America, as well as, countries like Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Guadaloupe and Martinique.

Brent is a graduate of the University of Central Florida in social science. He also starred as a junior college player at Brevard Community College in Florida, playing for coach Don Smith.
