Brent
serves as the program’s director of basketball operations,
and he is responsible for overseeing and managing all
aspects of the men’s basketball program and office. His
duties include: opponent scouting, opponent film breakdown
and analysis, recruiting, weights and conditioning,
compliance, camp coordinator for all of Clayton State and
Coach Gibbons’ Florida camps, as well as, coaching and
developing post players.
Along
with Gibbons and fellow assistant coach Cory Baldwin,
Buchanan is responsible for assembling each of the last
three Clayton State recruiting classes that ranked among the
nation’s best.
Buchanan
coached with Gibbons during the most successful season ever
at Florida Southern. The program was 32-2, ranked No. 1 in
the country, and advanced to the Division II Elite Eight. He
also coordinated and oversaw Florida Southern’s successful
summer tour in Europe. During the tour, Florida Southern
played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France
beating two Division I professional clubs.
Prior
to working as an assistant at FSC, Buchanan served as head
coach at Eau Gaille High School in Melbourne, FL for five
years. Buchanan, who was one of the youngest at 22 to be
named a head men’s high school basketball coach in
Florida, is the all-time winningest coach at Eau Gaille and
led the squad to two state playoff appearances and an era of
notoriety as a solid program around the state.
Buchanan,
who is known as Coach "B" by the players, has kept
in touch with his former players from Eau Gaille, Florida
Southern, the ABA and Clayton State. Twelve of his players
at Eau Gaille went on to play collegiately, including Matt
Walters, who starred for the 2002 national champion
University of Miami football team and currently plays for
the New York Jets.
Buchanan
has traveled extensively throughout his coaching career.
Coaching in the ABA and his recruiting duties has enabled
him to visit most major cities across America, as well as,
countries like Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece,
Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Sweden,
Switzerland, South Africa, Guadaloupe and Martinique.
Brent is a graduate
of the University of Central Florida in social science. He
also starred as a junior college player at Brevard Community
College in Florida, playing for coach Don Smith.
