Gibbons
is entering his first season as an assistant coach at
Clayton State after an extremely successful collegiate
career at Clayton State and Florida Southern. Jay’s
basketball duties include: player development, practice
organization, film editing, promotions, game day
organization and scout team coach.
Gibbons won a combine 106 games in his four years with the
Lakers and Mocs, which included winning four conference
championships, and participating in three NCAA Division II
Tournaments and two "Elite Eights."
As point guard of the Lakers last season, he directed
Clayton State to its first-ever Peach Belt Conference
Championship with a 19-9 record overall and a 15-4 mark in
the league.
Gibbons
finished the season with 168 assists, averaging six per
game, ranking him second on the all-time Clayton State
single season list. Jay ranked among the nation’s best in
assist per game last season and led the Peach Belt
Conference. He dished off a PBC and career high 12 assists
against Morehouse last year.
In addition to his championship at Clayton State, Gibbons
captured three conference titles at Florida Southern. He was
a key member of the Mocs’ most successful season ever in
1999-00, when Florida Southern finished with a 32-2 record
and was ranked the No. 1 in the country.
He has been an important member of Gordon Gibbons’
basketball camps in Georgia, Florida and in the Caribeaan.
Jay is now involved in recruiting in both Georgia and
Florida.
A native of Lakeland, FL, Gibbons graduated high school from
Kathleen High School and helped guide the team coached by
Alvin Jones, Jr., to the 4A state championship in 1997. He
is team was ranked No. 1 in Florida for two years. He was
named to the Tampa Tribune and Lakeland Ledger All-County
teams.
Gibbons
was a teammate of several other high school standouts in
Alvin Jones (Georgia Tech & Philadelphia Sixers),
Freddie Mitchell (Philadelphia Eagles), B.B. Waldon (South
Florida), and Carver Donaldson (Florida State).
Gibbons will graduate in the spring with a B.A. in education
from Clayton State. |
