MORROW,
GA --- March 13, 2003 --- Clayton College & State University women’s basketball
player Catreia Shaw is coming off one of the best individual seasons
in Clayton State women’s basketball history, and as a result, the
postseason awards recognizing her superb play are beginning to pour
in. Shaw, who was named last week to the Peach Belt
All-Conference team for the second straight season, has been named
this week to the 2003 Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) Honorable Mention All-American selection.
Both honors will put her in the running for All-American honors
to be announced later this month.
Shaw, a 6-foot-3 center, from
Pearson, GA, received the honors after leading the Lakers to a 16-12
record this season, the second best record in school history. Clayton
State placed fifth in the PBC this year, its highest finish ever,
winning a school record 10 league games. A two-year starter for the Lakers
after playing two seasons at Grayson County College in Texas, Shaw
becomes the first player in the women’s program to be named to the
South Atlantic All-Region squad and the first to be named an Honorable
Mention All-American. She started 53-of-55 games in her
two-year career at Clayton State and is the Lakers all-time leader in
points per game, averaging 15.9 points per game, and in field goal
percentage, shooting over 60 percent from the field. Her 17 points, 11
rebounds per game and 61 percent shooting from the floor this season
all rank second in the Clayton State single season record book. Shaw finished the season ranked
first in the Peach Belt Conference in rebounding and field goal
percentage and ranked third in scoring. She ranked seventh in the
nation in field goal percentage and 20th in rebounding. Her top game this past season came
against USC-Aiken when she scored 28 points and pulled a school record
23 rebounds against then nationally ranked the University of South
Carolina Aiken. The 23 rebounds was tied for seventh in NCAA Division
II for the most rebounds in a game this season. She also scored 30 points and pulled
15 rebounds against Brewton-Parker, en route to being named the MVP of
the Heritage Bank Tip-Off Tournament. She had 15 “double-doubles”
out of 27 games this season and scored in double-digits in 24-of-25
games. ##CCSU## |
